A New Home for Arts Education

Following much eager anticipation, the new home for Playhouse Square Foundation’s arts education programs, the Idea Center at Playhouse Square, opened to the public in September. “Arts education has high priority as part of Playhouse Square Foundation’s nonprofit mission. Through the generosity of donors, sponsors and grant-makers, we are able to invest $1 million each year in arts education programming. We see it as an investment toward a vibrant, creative community,” explained Art J. Falco, President and CEO of Playhouse Square Foundation.

The goal of Playhouse Square Foundation’s Arts Education Department is to offer a wide variety of quality opportunities for learning through the arts and to provide Northeast Ohio with the very best in arts education programming. The department annually reaches more than 100,000 children and adults through its programs and aims to double that reach by 2007 using the new space and resources of the Idea Center. “It’s so exciting to be able to offer programs we could only dream of in the past. We are reaching new audiences and creating new ways for people of all ages to access the arts,” said Colleen Porter, Director of Arts Education.

This Winter, the Arts Education Department will offer the following new programs: eight-week after school programs for teens in acting for radio and television, cabaret singing and spoken word poetry; a Saturday film-making class for girls; a lunchtime public speaking class for downtown professionals and other lifelong learning classes for adults; and family workshops to complement performances that are part of the Discovery Theatre Series for Families.

The Idea Center, created through the partnership between WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN ideastream and Playhouse Square Foundation, serves as a community resource for the arts, technology, education and collaboration. In addition to housing Playhouse Square Foundation’s arts education programs, it is also the new broadcast headquarters for ideastream.
