Slam U Writing Workshop featuring John Survivor Blake

Teens (ages 14-19) are invited to this free writing workshop led by John Survivor Blake. The first in a series of workshops leading up to the Slam U semi-finals in April, the workshop will cover the basics of both writing and performing poetry as well as provide an opportunity for Cleveland youth to learn from one of the country’s leading performance poets.

John Survivor Blake’s is the story of from park bench to Park Avenue. A 2007 National Poetry Slam finalist, four-time semifinalist at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café, Finalist at Urbana Slam, and slam coach of the Slam Richmond Youth team that recently finished 3rd in the world, John S. Blake has shared stages and pages with some of the most beautiful minds in poetry today: Saul Williams, Amiri Baraka, Roger Bonair-Agard, Suheir Hamad, and many others. His work has been published in Two Bridges Review, Naugatuck River Review, Ardor, The Sparrow Ghost Collective, Red Fez, In The Biblical Sense Anthology, Adobe Walls Literary Journal, Malpais Review, PenIt Magazine, BeyondRaceMag, InTheFray, Urban Views Weekly, and more. John facilitates creative writing workshops at youth detention centers and jails, universities, public schools and countless poetry venues across the nation including classes taught at Brave New Voices. He also curates, hosts and facilitates workshops at Slam Richmond Reading Series in Richmond VA.

Where do we park?

The PlayhouseSquare Garage is located at East 15th and Chester with elevators located on each level and a walkway to the complex. PlayhouseSquare has kept event night parking affordable for our customers. Parking can be purchased for the on-site PlayhouseSquare garage for just $12.00 ($10.00 advance purchase). Do you need to purchase tickets by phone or in-person?

The Ticket Office is located in the State Theatre lobby and is open Monday-Sunday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Hours vary when we have an evening performance and will also vary during the summer months.
